    Paul Gilroy(Author) Stuart Hall(Author)
People of African and Caribbean descent have inhabited Great Britain for centuries. Eminent professor Paul Gilroy, renowned for his work exploring the social and cultural dimensions of British blackness and black Britishness, has assembled a living visual history of blacks in the British Isles. Spanning over two hundred years, this is an unprecedented collection featuring 321 black and white photographs, with an introduction and commentary by Gilroy, and a preface from Professor Stuart Hall.

Gilroy s commentary is tart and learned; this is the rare book that would sit as easily on coffee tables as on university syllabuses. --Daily TelegraphBlack Britain is a testament to the strength black people in this country have shown in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. --Metro

A really good book giving a visual and verbal account of the history of black London from a leading black academic lecturer's perspective. A walk down memory lane - particularly now that many of those early visitors from the 50's and 60's are sadly dying out (I've attended a few funerals over the last few years!)

Beautiful book, a wonderful account of Britain from a Black perspective. The book was well packaged and delivered in good time. This was a Christmas present that was gratefully received.

So interesting - even the front cover of this book caught my eye. This is in my "specialist" book collection.

I saw this book on sale at the Imperial War Museum and decided this was a must have. I would love to find out what happened to many of the people shown, especially the old sword swallower living in a rock den in Wales and the twin boy boxers who grew up in a Barnardos home. Beautiful pictures - some painful - but a must.
